Why MLM is a Dirty Word?

Something smells fishy and distasteful about MLM. Do you smell that?

For years people have had a bad taste for MLM, multilevel marketing, network marketing, a pyramid scheme, or whatever you want to call it. Why? There are several reasons and many are no more than a buyers remorse frame of mind. “They” said it would be easy!

Back in the early 80’s when I was first exposed to the industry, we were excited, we thought we were going to make a gazillion bucks and live in paradise. We went to all the local meetings, in home meetings, listened to as many tapes as we could get our hands on, traveled to the large functions and made a lot of friends. The gazillion bucks never happened, only sponsored a handful of people that never did anything, spent a big wad of cash on the business, and bought product that was over priced and was hard to sell. After 5 or 6 years there were many reasons we could point to for failure. Was it a scam, were we cheated or stolen from? Are we bitter or better because of the experience?

It sounded so easy! I think the reason MLM has such a questionable reputation is because most people do drop out. Rather than looking in the mirror they make up false reasons for their failure. Who wants to admit; I didn’t commit to the business except when it was convenient. I didn’t read the books they told me to. I didn’t learn how to make follow up calls. I didn’t talk to quality leads. I didn’t believe in my product. I wasn’t willing to get out of my comfort zone. So the drop outs make up some plausible reason for why they didn’t succeed. It’s company’s fault, the compensation plan, the product, the upline didn’t help or any number of things.

It has been said by many in today’s MLM industry, which 97% +/- people fail with in their 1st year and drop out of the business. It may be true that they drop out but I don’t believe they fail. I believe that most didn’t understand what they had become part of. Much like their day job it will take time, effort, study and practice to become the person they need to be in order to build a business.

How many people have gone to college or trade school to get a certain type of job or profession? How many of those actually graduated and became employed in that specific profession? Many never made it and dropped out of school! Look at what they are doing today; a majority are doing something in a totally different career path.

Did they fail? Were they cheated? Did they lose focus on their dream? Was the process longer or harder than they thought? People have a tendency to quit or drop out too soon. We want to take the easiest way. You don’t know how close you really are to success.

Most network marketing companies are good ones, with the right intentions and each believes they have the best solutions and products to sell. The compensation plans are designed to return a large part of the profits to the distributor. Ye of course there are the crooks of the business as there are in every profession. Is every investment broker / consultant a Bernie Madoff? Let’s hope not, but his kind give the rest a bad name.

The network marketing industry is in my opinion one of the best business models one could be involved in. You are your own business, self employed and responsible for the growth of your business. The beauty of multi-level marketing is that your success is directly related to how much you help your people, your group, and your organization to succeed. You won’t earn a dime if you aren’t willing to help someone else win big. The more you help, the more you teach another to help the more you will earn. This is a pure teach one to fish and feed them for a life time business opportunity. The people in your down line are not the competition, they represent the success of your business and a leader will support their growth.

Thirty years later I can truly say that my wife and I are better because of the MLM business, not bitter. We did not make any money to speak of back then, but we learned how to work with people. In 1986 we decided we had to drop out too, but never considered it a failure. We had become more than we were. We read the books and listened to the tapes to improve ourselves. Our MLM experience opened doors for other opportunities. We started a couple other businesses and have had good success. We met many people that we still work with today. Without our MLM experience my family would not have what we have or be who we are today. Thank you Lord!
